This bread shop has been open for a while now.. I' This bread shop has been open for a while now.. I'm technically not supposed to be eating bread as I'm intolerant to yeast and mildly intolerant to wheat. But when I heard about a LYCHEE Bread, I had to have it. It is insanely good. Esp if you lightly toast it in the oven - the crust gets crisp again, and the interior soft and flavourful. It's good cold as well, but you've got to have strong jaws / teeth. I'm not a fan of eating it that way as it's too much work 😅 Also, thankful to this lovely loaf of bread that made me feel inspired enough to shoot this morning. 𝙋𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙧𝙪𝙨 𝙋𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙝. Possibly the hardest theme in the entire #eatcaptureshare challenge, and also the last! ⁣ ⁣ The image is supposed to be inspired by 𝘞𝘢𝘺𝘯𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘶𝘥's work. ⁣ ⁣ What I've learnt from looking at google images:⁣ ▫️ his images tend to be colourful. ⁣ ▫️ images are either filled with repetition, or focuses on a single subject.⁣ ▫️ cross section of food are common (eg cakes). ⁣ ▫️ tendency to have blue shadows, contrasted with yellow or oranges. ⁣ ▫️ light is typically hard light, or just lightly diffused. ⁣ ▫️ light tends to be side or front lighting.⁣ ⁣ I've usually skipped this part of Kimberly's challenges because it was something I could never quite get my head around. But I guess, my mind has changed through spending time away from IG and realising that being an 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳, this is exactly the kind of exercise I need! ⁣ ⁣ I can't say I was a fan of some of the shots, but I thought I'd share them anyway because the thought process was actually pretty fun.⁣ ⁣ Entering the first image for the challenge because it's my favourite - focusing on the cross section. Instead of making my shadows blue, I used a blue plate with some light and darker blues to (hopefully) create the same effect of the contrast between orange/yellow and blues. ⁣ ⁣ The 2nd photo is my interpretation when referencing another shot which had red candies with sticks in them, and blue shadows. 𝗔 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼 𝗔 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. I thought about this #eatcaptureshare challenge for some time because frankly, I don't have any fancy stories that jump to mind and I did not have strong emotional connections to the inspo stories shared.⁣ ⁣ So I thought about it and decided to interpret it as 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦, 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘶𝘱.⁣ ⁣ It also happens to be the lunar new year this week, so this particular story popped up in my mind. ⁣ ⁣ During the lunar new year, we would always stuff our face with snacks such as pineapple tarts, almond cookies, peak cookies, shrimp rolls, bak kwa (grilled meat slices - the best way I can think of to describe these 🤣) ⁣ ⁣ Given that I have food allergies/intolerance (the latter is more accurate, but most people in my country don't understand that concept so I simply tell them that I have allergies - otherwise, I get chilli in my food with them telling me that "it's not spicy" 🤨), I had to make my own snacks!⁣ ⁣ My ultimate favourite snack are the pineapple tarts (you'd have seen them on my feed every year). Thank god for the hubby who helped to buy, de-skin and chop u the pineapples so I could make pineapple jam ❤️ Also thank God for @unconventionalcooks sharing their paleo pineapple tarts recipe years ago 💕 ⁣ ⁣ In case you wonder what the red pieces of paper are - as kids, we'd receive red packets (envelopes) with money in them as forms of blessings. "𝗧𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵 "𝗧𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄" was the last theme for the #eatcaptureshare challenge this week. ⁣ ⁣ What's so new about this? ⁣ ⁣ Just looks like another photo I'd take on a regular day, isn't it?⁣ ⁣ Well, it was the FIRST time I've used a 𝘮𝘪𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳 to reflect light. ⁣ ⁣ Due to the placement of light and the angle of the cut section of the cake, it was impossible to light this properly with just one light. And well, I only had one light. ⁣ ⁣ I did consider lowering the shutter speed to let in some ambient light (in fact, I did it) but it looked bad. Seriously bad and flat. Not quite what I wanted.⁣ ⁣ So, I remembered reading a library book about product lighting, and my key takeaway was that they use mirrors smartly and rather liberally. Love that book - such an eye opener though a video would have been easier to visualise what they meant. Books can only go so far. ⁣ ⁣ So back to the mirrors. I always imagined that the light reflected from a mirror would be too in-your-face. And yes, it probably can be. So managing the angle and distance of the mirror helped. ⁣ ⁣ And once again, because I have no modelling light on my speedlight, I just had to tweak the angle of the mirror and keep shooting until I got a decent shot. ⁣ ⁣ It didn't help that I had to 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥-𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥 the mirror because the mirror had to be further than the edge of the table surface 😆⁣ ⁣ 👉🏻 Swipe for the 'behind the scenes'⁣ ⁣ Oh, and I didn't actually intend to crumble the cake as a prop (though it worked out fine). The light that works with everything. ⁣ ⁣ 2nd theme for the week in @thelittleplantation's #eatcaptureshare challenge. ⁣ ⁣ But frankly, I much prefer backlight these days. Though lighting the front can be a bit of a b*tch when you're in a dark place... Which resulted in the next photo that I'll post for the challenge 😉⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 👉🏻 Swipe for the 'behind the scenes' - it's really just the standard setup that always works, if the light is doing its thing. ⁣ ⁣ In this case, I wasn't getting quite enough shadows so I 𝘥𝘪𝘥 post-process it a little. It was fun making this piece while keeping the wor It was fun making this piece while keeping the word GROUNDED in mind. It ended up looking like a landscape... or a burger 🍔, depending what your mind sees! I love abstract work so much. Because intent aside, I love that everyone can see what they want to see. Feel what they want to feel. Sure, it's a bonus if they feel what I felt when I made it, but that's not a deal breaker for me. Because in my mind, art is personal. Art is for each of us to touch our souls. To say hi to our souls. Experimenting with different mark making technique Experimenting with different mark making techniques. Wanted to keep it simple but SIMPLICITY IS THE HARDEST! Usually when I do acrylic abstract pieces, I barely see the first layers I've put on. Cos I just add more and more layers.. feeling into what feels right. But in recent days, I'm really trying to learn to keep it simple, because that's something I'm trying to do in life as well. Trying new methods.. And realising I have a habit Trying new methods.. And realising I have a habit of making my strokes in ONE DIRECTION. This was inspired by cool artists like wildflowerculture (omg can u come sg pls to teach 😍) and lisinka_summer_art. I have a couple more along this direction becos I wanna see how it can work with whatever else I'm playing with.. Finally painting again!!! Tbvh, I have quite a nu Finally painting again!!! Tbvh, I have quite a number of videos in my hard disk that I haven't "processed". And... I don't feel like doing it 🤣🤣🤣 So here's a painting I JUST DID. Not finished yet but I feel like I really wanna be PRESENT here too. Not a "oh I painted this 3 weeks ago, but here it is for u" cos... I kinda get bored talking about sth I did 3 weeks ago. I'd love to be that kinda person who can batch create stuff but I absolutely HATE sitting in front of my laptop. But I do LOVE just snapping shots and sharing it. I'm gonna trust that the universe, God, whoever is up there will find me lovely friends who not only accept but love my randomness. Will it be you? 😜 Anyhowwww, I'm just soooo happy to be painting again. I've been busy reading, studying various modalities and figuring out how I can help ppl in their journey. Hating it, and finally peeling off the tape and thinking, "oh it's not as bad as I imagined" 🤣 Really learning to sit with, and LOVING THE PROCESS of creation. It was fun and I learnt a couple of things. - ink lightens on watercolour paper - can be fun to dilute ink. - I love a good shine 😂 - random strokes are fun, but sometimes they clash. Another day, another 6 grid painting. I enjoy pain Another day, another 6 grid painting. I enjoy painting this way because it's just a huge experiment. I never really know what I'm going to get. I mean, you do get a sense that perhaps more colour is required at one spot, or more contrast is needed at another, or maybe even a simple - I wonder what a huge stroke across the painting would look like. Painting like this is the only time I can go in without expectations, and be pleasantly surprised by the outcome. I may not LOVE all the mini paintings, but each teach me something. And honestly, just being able to create is a blessing. So I'll just take that, and release expectations on the outcome.
